Our Wedding Playlists - music for the ceremony, cocktails, and dancing - 26 September 2009

Being a huge fan of music in general, and having previously DJed for a few years in high school, I decided to DJ my own wedding. Being the groom, this meant that I could pretty much just push play on a playlist, so I put together playlists for the ceremony and reception. If you're planning to handle the music at your own wedding, I hope these playlists give you some ideas.

The Best Music, TV, Film and Literature of 2008 - 24 February 2009

Now that 2008 has past (ok, I'll admit 2008 is long gone at this point) I've returned to an ancient tradition: making a list of my favorite stuff from the past year. I'm a bit late, but if the Oscars can be this late, so can I.

16 Mile Creek - 18 November 2008

I miss the Rocky Mountains, towering to the west, the sagebrush that dot the wide western plains, and the simple life/naiveté of isolated Wyoming folk.

Bry's Graduation - 16 May 2008

My Neighborhood 4 - 2 April 2008

Much much snow in my neighborhood.

My personal side (conversing with others) - 16 March 2008

"I'm wont to do that" To change my site. My personal site.

Infinite Jest - 21 February 2008

It's not often that I comment on books here, my site of things vaguely related to my life. I read a fair bit, though I tend to not talk about books near enough, on this site or in the real world of face-to-face, person interaction. I just finished reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace and I must say it's one of the best things I've read in a long time.

New Discoveries of 2007 - 5 January 2008

Every end of year, lists come out. The top 10 blah of 200x. The worst 15 of the year. Such and such. I don't consume enough new entertainment each year to write a list comprised of new material. Yet I can't avoid the tendency to list things

My Neighborhood 3 - 9 December 2007

Oh Sun
Where art thee? or thou? or what aren't thou?

I mean, where are you?

My Neighborhood 2 - 15 November 2007

My Neighborhood 2 In my neighborhood there's lots of foreigners. It's ok for me to call them foreigners because I am also a foreigner here. Earlier in the semester I went to my french neighbors' place for crepes. They didn't like my anglo way of saying crepe since I didn't get the throaty 'r' in there but that's how culture goes. It's assimilated, then mutated to fit the locality. McDonalds gets this and that's why they succeed in the...

My Neighborhood - 12 November 2007

In my neighborhood a man with turrets comes around everyday searching the recycling bins for pieces he can get money from, like a wine bottle or an empty can of beer. He shouts obscenities while doing this. His job.

Flower Girl - 17 August 2007

Flower Girl The kids in a wedding are at least as interesting as the adults. Probably more so....

Red Fox, part II - 24 July 2007

Red Fox - 22 July 2007

A couple of days ago, I was out shooting macros of bugs and I heard some crunching behind me. I thought another human was walking nearby, so I turned around and looked about. I didn't see a human, but this fox instead.

Couplet - 17 July 2007

Fly - 5 July 2007

Another macro... - 3 July 2007

Yet another bug - 29 June 2007

Ok, so if you haven't noticed, I'm into macros recently.

Moth - 26 June 2007

I have a new life goal: to see 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen, meaning in a movie theatre.

Spider in the shower II - 7 June 2007

Extreme macro of the spider who lived in my shower.

Spider in the shower - 6 June 2007

I don't feel right killing anything, even spiders. My girlfriend hates this.

Portrait of Tien-Ying and Kwang-Yin in Budapest - 29 May 2007

It was a rather gray, drab day. The inside of the church was swell. Pretty. Colorful. In the surrounding cemetary lay many bodies.

More Rooftops in Szentendre - 13 May 2007

Barber Shop Sign - 29 April 2007

The next few years - 17 April 2007

It hasn't been long since I graduated from college, but I'm about to do it again, this time with an M.S. in computer science. But that's not what I want to talk about, I want to talk about what I'm going to do after the degree.

Pondering by the Danube - 5 April 2007

Yesterday, we took a 20km train ride for 40 minutes to Szentendre. This was a beautiful, quaint place. We wandered around the winding streets for hours and sat in quiet thought by the Danube.

Szentendre Rooftops - 3 April 2007

Budapest Parliament Ceiling - 1 February 2007

Hungarian Parliament Tour - 24 January 2007

I took this photo two years ago in January 2005 in Budapest, Hungary, while traveling with my friends Kwang-Yin and Tien-Ying. Here, we’re on a tour of the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Lonely Bike - 27 December 2006

After nearly two feet of snow, this bike was looking a bit dejected and lonely all by himself on campus.

Fall in Fort Collins II - 6 December 2006

Fall in Fort Collins I - 13 November 2006

Bikers are quite common in Fort Collins. In fact, the only other place I've seen more bikers is in The Netherlands and Boulder, Colorado.

Medicine Bow Peak I - 9 November 2006

A Wyoming hike in September could mean snow.

Rainbow in the Backyard - 4 November 2006

Green is not a typical color in the Wyoming landscape palette; this spring was unusually wet.

Drawing the Brooklyn Bridge - 2 November 2006

NYSE - 19 October 2006

That's one big flag.

Down New York Airconditioned Street - 17 October 2006

Lexington Avenue During the Day - 1 October 2006

Lexington Avenue at Night - 9 September 2006

A gorgeous midtown view.

Falling Water - 7 September 2006

The hike was steep and rushed, but reaching a clearing and seeing this gigantic waterfall in front of me made it all worthwhile.

Flowing Creek - 6 September 2006

Norway has so much water, so I naturally took photos of it. Here's a creek I stopped beside to catch a quick lunch of cheese on rolls.

Software Engineering in Delaware - 1 August 2006

My summer job is winding to a close, and I haven't talked about it on here yet. I'm doing software engineering this summer, living 1,800 miles away from home in Wilmington, Delaware.

Out the train window - 24 July 2006

Norway in a Nutshell - 20 July 2006

I took this picture out a bus window in Norway while touring the mighty Hardangerfjord.

Streets of Bergen - 17 July 2006

Norway down the fjord - 10 July 2006

I traveled to Bergen, Norway a couple of weeks back for a math/theoretical computer science conference.

Creek in the Poconos - 17 June 2006

Shots from the road: Day 3, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Delaware - 11 June 2006

I left Cleveland, Ohio, a bit later than I really anticipated, but didn't care because my trip was dwindling down. I entered Pennsylvania and quickly realized how beautiful the vast rolling mountains of the Appalachians are.

Shots from the road: Day 2, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio - 7 June 2006

Let me first say that Iowa is a dismal place. I have honestly never seen so many overweight people in my life.

Shots from the road: Day 1, Nebraska and Iowa - 27 May 2006

Last week, I moved from Colorado to Delaware. Don't worry, this move is temporary, the result of a summer internship doing software engineering. Above, is a shot from western Nebraska. Desolate and mostly truckers on the road.

Under Charles Bridge - 21 April 2006

Here's a Venice-like view under Charles Bridge. This bridge crosses the Vltava river and is might old; construction was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and began in 1357.

Prague from above - 8 March 2006

Namesti Republiky - 6 March 2006

After much feet shuffling, I finally have enough of my slides from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria scanned to post some photos. This is the Náměstí Republiky subway stop in Praha.

Antelope - 16 February 2006

Craft Time - 29 January 2006

Missing Tooth - 26 January 2006

The coolest thing about little kids is the purity of their emotions. Four-year-olds don't know how to mask their feelings; their faces show what they're thinking. Us grown-ups have long since learned to disguise our feelings.

Gabby redux - 18 January 2006

Baggage Claim - 16 January 2006

Towards tomorrow - 6 January 2006

I turn, my eyes sweeping over the landscape. My wet eyes are riddled with an unmistakable sadness; a sort of soft, tender mourning for all that has past. Those times, people, places that have passed through my fingers like falling sand, each grain a memory that was, but will never be again.

The demotivation of andy - 31 December 2005

I am a rather motivated person. I work far more than 40 hours a week; truthfully, it's closer to 60. And yet, when I'm here at my parents' house, I lack motivation. A ghastly situation for one such as myself.

Watching people - 20 December 2005

I have this problem. Whenever I'm out in public, I thoroughly check people out. A while back, Bry told me to stop staring at this girl in a coffeehouse. I suppose I'm a firm believer that as humans, the animals that most interest us are other humans.

A tale of holiday shopping - 2 December 2005

First off, my officemate is from Korea. She's 35 and came to Colorado six years ago. Yesterday, we started talking about holiday shopping. Because it's that time of year.

To the desert and back - 28 November 2005

I just returned from the desert, where I spent a couple days. My younger sister attends school in Tempe, Arizona, so rather than spend Thanksgiving in cold, windy Wyoming, my parents and I went to this suburb of Phoenix to eat turkey and celebrate togetherness.

Mating Birds - 18 November 2005

This bird, which I've no idea what type of bird it is, was trying to woo a lady bird a few branches away. He kept singing some angry sounding mating call to her, while she replied oh-so-sweetly.

Fall on Colorado State University's Campus - 7 November 2005

Looking down the Oval at Colorado State University

Retailers, please wake up - 6 November 2005

Yesterday, I bought new speakers for my car. My stock speakers had outlived any sort of usefulness after twelve years of use. The salesman tried to sell me expensive speakers. I smiled, knowingly, when he told me I should look at better-than-the-cheapest models, because "they could get louder without blowing." To this, I nearly laughed. I didn't, but I did grin. A big grin.

Rainy day art project - 23 October 2005

In Limbo - 12 October 2005

Having been delayed many hours in Minneapolis, I finally arrived at Denver International Airport at close to 3 am.

Wine tasting with Austin - 2 October 2005

Wine tasting with Austin Saturday night, I had the pleasure of hanging out with some friends and sampling some of Austin's homebrewed wine. A good time in all. Earlier in the evening, Curt and Shelby even kicked it for a bit, straight down from Montana. Austin's giving a belligerent Kellen the eye. And look! In the next two pictures you'll see me, a person who hasn't graced this site in many many months since I like to stay behind...

Autumn in the Snowies - 25 September 2005

Autumn really is one of my favorite times of the year, and it's season that's too short in this part of the world as the night temperatures drop very quickly. The leaves quickly turn to bright hues and then fall to the Earth in an effort to continue their lives in warmer days.

Representing Wyoming - 16 September 2005

On top of the mountain - 13 September 2005

Jeff, Bryanne and I hiked up Medicine Bow Peak Sunday, reminding me how truely lucky I am to live around such beauty.

Millennium Park at Night III - 9 September 2005

This is one of the huge fountains in Chicago's Millennium Park. They're kind of strange, but still completely awesome.

Millennium Park at Night II - 4 September 2005

I was surpised at the number of people hanging out, chatting and relaxing in Millennium Park this late June evening. Chicago, unlike most places in America, is a city, vibrant and alive.

Millennium Park at Night - 1 September 2005

Here's a photo from my most recent trip to Chicago, which was in late June.

The Coming Storm - 29 August 2005

I took this photo directly behind my parents' house when I visited them a couple of weeks ago. A tornado was brewing, and it later destroyed dozens of homes in a village 10 miles north.

The Prelude - 21 August 2005

I have officially started work in the computer science department. Why they required all new teaching assistants to start a week before school is beyond my current comprehension.

A Choice - 18 August 2005

“We’ve everything read to go and he’s willing to do it,” my boss told the big boss. Climb another step and someday we’ll sift through the murk.

Falling Sunset - 11 August 2005

I'm at my parents' house in Wyoming. It's strange to come back after spending the summer away in the city where things occur on a grandiose scale.

Sufjan Stevens Live at the Bluebird Theatre - 1 August 2005

Friday, Bry and I saw Sufjan Stevens and company play at the Bluebird Theatre in Denver, Colorado. Simply put, the show was phenomenal.

Flowers at the Ranch - 20 June 2005

The family ranch is beautiful right now, the grass is green, and the hills are covered with flowers. It's too bad that all will be a dried out yellow brown in a couple of weeks.

On the Corner - 10 June 2005

Morphing - 22 May 2005

Well Wyoming, you've been good to me. Maybe someday I'll get the entrepreneur bug, start a company and return.

At Home - 11 May 2005

I'm back at my parents' home now. The weather is dreary; snow is falling. I can't leave the house without running into someone who I'd rather not see, and my allergies are terrible.

Search in Social Networks - 27 February 2005

Now that we understand something about the topology of many networks, how can we exploit this information? Today, I'll list a couple of papers that show how we can use information about a social network's topology to search it in an efficient manner.

Fundamental Network Papers - 26 February 2005

I'm often asked by my computer science/math pals about the research I've done as far as complex/social/small-world networks go. This is an attempt to answer the questions about where to start. What papers are the most important in this field?

Linkages - 24 February 2005

Articles I'm digging this week.

Favorite Albums of 2004 - 23 February 2005

A couple of people have asked me why I didn't writeup my favorite albums from 2004. To be honest, I don't exactly know why.

Griftpark - 18 February 2005

And now... - 17 February 2005

Well. It's been a long time since I've written something longer than a few lines here. I justify it by saying I've been busy, and I have been. So what have I done the last two months? Wow. It's been hectic, and great.

The Culture Boat - 15 February 2005

So this is Dutch justice. Sort of... the boat on the right is The Culture Boat. It's a "coffeeshop." The building on the left, across the canal, is a women's prison.

Right Now - 22 December 2004

Time flys doesn't it?

It's hard to believe that 2004 is almost over. 2004, you've treated me well. You saw me turn 22, you watched me grow as a person, you changed my life. I think 2004 has been one of my favorite years ever. Admittedly, I'm not ready to move on to 2005.

A Year in Review - 20 December 2004

See you all in 2005.
A work in progress.

This is the straight, semi-edited version of my Moleskine notes from my trip to Barcelona. Spanish culture, parties in the streets. Visits to mountain monestaries and a robbing by a "knife."

Mullets, painting, GUIs, genius attitude, social networking and it's almost Christmas.

Good Night You Darlings of Learn Ignorance - 27 November 2004

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans.
I took the GRE today.
I started two new courses this week.

Shooting slides - 18 November 2004

Taking Challenging Courses - 11 November 2004

So I have to admit, my grade in algebraic number theory is lacking in goodness right now. I'm barely passing the course. Not to mention the fact that I constantly work on this course. I've put in at leave 20 hours per week into this course.

Catching Up - 10 November 2004

Hi there. So I've been exceptionally busy. Ok not that busy, but busy enough. I'm done with one course this semester, as the semester is divided into two terms.

Common Misconceptions of Americans, Part I - 4 November 2004

This is part one in a four or five or so part series. We'll deal with the big money issue of oil this time around.

Must have guide to presidential candidates 2004.

Language, the great segregationist - 30 October 2004

While living in Europe, I've learned a thing or two about the perils of language. These are a few observations of language use that I've noticed. Part one in an ongoing series that is yet to be written.

Debate at ASU - 18 October 2004

These pics are from my little sister Janelle, also a student at the site of the third presidential debate Arizona State University. It's pretty cool that she was near the debate. Course, students couldn't actually go to the debate.

Modest Mouse at the Fillmore in Denver - 16 October 2004

I went to a Modest Mouse concert a couple of months ago!

How American are the Dutch? - 12 October 2004

While enjoying a coffee with two fellow students after a canceled seminar, the Dutch one asked me if I thought that Holland could be the 51st or 52nd state in the US. I guess I hadn't really thought about it before.

How similar is the Netherlands to the United States?

Utrecht Stadhuis and Dom - 10 October 2004

The first picture from Utrecht on this site!

Birthday - 8 October 2004

My flatmates are awesome. Birthday celebrations are grand.

Musings - 5 October 2004

Four completely random thoughts. McDonalds, the south, NP-complete problems and computer science.

Texel Trip - 2 October 2004

Saturday morning, I dashed out of my flat and caught a train to Den Helder. Course the train doesn't go all the way to Den Helder, so I had to take a bus part of the way. Then a boat ride to Texel. These names probably mean nothing and look strange. And they are, but they mean something to me now.

Clubs - 29 September 2004

I would like to declare that Dutch clubs are totally bizarre. Bon, crappy music. Kids having fun. Kids enjoying life, it's youth, that's the point.

The City - 19 September 2004

Utrecht is an amazing city. The cafes are great. The bars are great. Really, it's all great.

My Domicile - 17 September 2004

My new home is basically a dorm for international students and Dutch students attending the faculty of music and dance. It's a dorm room, with a few fantastic features, making it much more to me.

Annoyed by you - 14 September 2004

My First Publication (hopefully) - 12 September 2004

This paper marks my beginnings as a research scientist. It's the first paper I've submitted to a journal. It's not much, but it's a beginning.

Language - 11 September 2004

I don't think I ever appreciated how big this world is before now. I never realized, never cared, that I can't talk with most of the people on Earth. Someday that will change, someday we'll have a world of one language.

Start of Class - 8 September 2004

Despite my cries, school has started for one last year. Dutch courses are similar to American courses, perhaps lacking a period of goof off time.

Honestly Honest - 7 September 2004

The Red Light District is sad, intriguing and strange. It's sad to see beautiful girls trying to sell themselves. It's sad to see junkies on the corners. If there's one thing I've noticed since I've been here, it's that the Dutch are straight up about "difficult" issues.

Dutch and Koffie - 6 September 2004

Dutch people sure love their coffee. And why not? It is good, really good.

Awakening to You - 4 September 2004

Arrival in Holland - 2 September 2004

Getting from the train station to my new flat in Utrecht took me two and half hours.

Arrival - 31 August 2004

So I'm in Holland now. Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Going to Europe - 26 August 2004

I guess this would be site news. Maybe news about me, but news of some sort. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to change this site, again. Not because I want to, I rather enjoy posting photos. No, because I'm leaving for the Netherlands at the end of August. I'm going on an exchange trip and spending the Fall 2004 semester at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Triple Divide Pass in Glacier NP - 25 August 2004

A shot from about half way up the Triple Divide Pass. Going up this trail was pretty rough. The weather was hot, the climb steep, my pack heavy. Course the gorgeous views made it worthwhile.

Morning Star Lake in Glacier NP - 24 August 2004

We spent a night at Morning Star Lake. The surrounding area was awesome. Just beautiful. Unfortunately, the light was never very good, so this is probably the closest I came to capturing the beauty of the area.

On Top of the Continental Divide - 23 August 2004

Here's me and Bry as we cross the Triple Divide Pass in Glacier National Park.

Odessa Lake - 11 August 2004

Bry and I took another trip to Rocky Mountain National Park this past weekend. The weather was gorgeous, and I packed superfluous camera gear, so I managed to get some really nice shots using a tripod.

Wyoming University - 9 August 2004

I realized the other day that I'd never, ever taken a single picture of the University of Wyoming's campus, despite seeing the place virtually every day for the past three years. So, here's a picture of campus.

Let's Own the World - 6 August 2004

Soaps Will Kill You - 5 August 2004

One day, the store was offering commissions to clerks for every person they signed up. When the professor was asked if he wanted a card, he explained that he didn't want the store tracking all his purchases, knowing where he lived, sending him junk, etc. The kid simply replied, "use a fake name!" So he did.

Quack II - 4 August 2004

Sunset on Third Street - 1 August 2004

Walking home, I encountered a brilliant sky, so I stepped in the middle of the street and took a picture.

A few weekends ago, I attended the wedding of Dave and Kass, then DJ'd their reception. I'm pretty sure everyone had a good time. I sure did.

Forest Floor - 5 July 2004

Jeff and I wondered around the forest, I'd came prepared - tripod strapped on my pack. The sun was nice, so I snapped this shot off. I like the way it turned out. When I took it, I didn't think it would be nice at all, taking the picture regardless. I rather like the way this forest floor turned out. The light, spattered from the sun filtered through leaves, adds enough to keep my interest.

Spider Macro - 6 June 2004

Spider: Up Close.

Canyon Road - 3 June 2004

Driving from Laramie to my hometown Douglas, you traverse a crappy, old highway. Construction underway for modernization, but not yet complete. Sure you know the highway type. The kind with six inch shoulders, narrow lanes. This one, it goes through a canyon. So you've got this torn-up road with many blind corners and hills. The speed limit on this section of the highway is 55mph. Before and after the section through the canyon, the speed limit is 65mph.

A New Outlet - 24 May 2004

My summer will likely consist of enough massive graph theory to drive me out of my mind, but I know it's going to be great.

John Revolting, Diana Rush, Gloria Stunnem, Bruce Leap, Lyza M, Sunny & Share and I Andy Warthog sit in the wake of a terrible murder; dance club owner Jackie Fever has just been slashed in the VIP section. We're the only suspects.
