Just for insanity’s sake, I’ve decided that for a while, I’m switching from my usual Mac usage to a PC. Don’t worry, though, I’m not running a flavor of Windows. Nope, I’m sticking to Linux. I don’t really have a good reason to do this, other than to learn a few things about linux.
I installed Redhat 8.0 on my crappy 1ghz pc a couple days back, and it’s been pretty enjoyable to use. With Mac OS X I never really had a reason to drop into the terminal, and that was a sad thing; but now, I get to drop in there and compile apps and do other various tasks quite often.
The only thing I’m really having a problem with is image editing. Yeah, The Gimp is a really nice application, but it’s not Photoshop. And to someone like me who’s used Photoshop for the past 5 years, it’s a tough transition. My only other complaint is that BBEdit doesn’t run on linux. Emacs is powerful, but it doesn’t even come close to BBEdit is how nice it is to operate.
So do I think that linux is ready for the masses? Redhat 8.0 is nice, but I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure that most people could do there basic tasks on here, like surfing the web with Mozilla or typing stuff with Open Office, but when they want to print out the stuff they typed they are going to have problems. Or when they want to install something, that’s probably not going to work out very well either. Right now, I’d say that the only UNIX distro ready for public consumption is Mac OS X. And it’s not really a true distro.
Well, I’m going to go do some programming with caml and figure out how to use that better.
I’m a switcher too.…
Sometimes, I use my right hand.…
…sometimes, my left.
hell yeah man, when you’re sick of the left, just switch on over to the right
