Well… I’m a long ways away from here…

Musings

1

McDonalds is wildly successful around the world, not because it’s American, but rather because it’s practical. McDonalds is kid friendly, it’s fast. With women working, this is practical.

2

America is quite a normal place without the south. We ought to simply tell the states that joined the confederacy that we were wrong. They can have their own nation, and they can have George Bush too.

Does anyone else have a problem believing that finding a k-clique in a general, undirected graph is NP-complete?

Ok here’s the problem, more specifically (from the Annotated List of Selected NP-complete Problems):

Name: Clique [GT19] 1

Input: An n-node undirected graph G(V,E) with node set V and edge set E; a positive integer k with k<=n.

Question: Does G contain a k-clique, i.e. a subset W of the nodes V such that W has size k and for each distinct pair of nodes u, v in W, {u,v} is an edge of G?

I am really having a hard time believing that there isn’t a polynomial time algorithm for this. If I only had more time, I’d work on this.

A good mathematician makes a better computer scientist than a good programmer. Computer science in its theoretical sense is not programming.

And last, I turn 22 tomorrow. Whoa, that was fast… no more good birthdays, 27 is important though.

  1. Happpy (early) birthday, sir! Hope it's a good one!

  2. Having spent a little over a third of my summer in the south, I'd say you're right. Except for the gulf coast. The water's really nice there so we should keep it. I agree, they can have G-Dub but we get to keep Dick.

  3. McDonalds is wildly popular because capitalist countries feel it necessary to impress our type of business on other countries and McDonalds is easy, requires no skilled workers, and rakes in the dough. The only reason it could be considered practical, is because it helps those who can't graduate from high school get a job. Off my soapbox now.

  4. Would you rather they didn't have jobs at all and were supported by a socialist economy? (Sorry Andy, can't resist)

  7. Dear Andrew,
Happy Birthday. Make sure you celebrate in a veerd foreign way. Also, I am also having a hard time believing that there isn’t a polynomial time algorithm for the problem you showed. If I had more time I'd do it for you. Finally, your sister spelled familiar wrong. Is she in college now? I mean come on...she's a Curtis. It's ok though Nellie, I spelled weird wrong.

  8. Thanks everyone. I had a great birthday... post to follow shortly.

Ryan A, you're an idiot. Plain and simple. Do you think that capitalist countries also force people to eat at McDonalds. Obviously a business is sucessful when they make money, this requires customers. And Tyler's argument is perfectly stated. No worries.
