another shot from Glacier National Park
The first picture I took in Glacier National Park

My flatmates are awesome.

For my birthday, they gave me chocolate and a bottle of absinthe. I’d asked them all what absinthe is like, since I’d never sampled the “green fairy.” It is illegal, after all, in the States. I can say that it’s basically just alcohol. The murky green substance does slide down easily when mixed with water and sugar, however. So Julka baked me a chocolate(!) cake too.

She said she wanted to bake a traditional Czech cake, but couldn’t find the right nuts here. No worries, it was fantastic without the traditions.

A voice coach taught me to sing, he couldn’t teach me to love

So we had a nice evening, drinking wine, chatting and pondering such things. Last night, we went out partying. I’d like to be ME central and say it was for my birthday, but the group to help foreign students threw a “pimp and ho” party. Yes, a school associated group held a pimp and hooker party. Can’t see that going over well in the States. Least not in Wyoming.

Left for the party at 11pm, came home at 4:30am. We’re getting the hang of the Dutch style. Dancing, drinking filled the night. We went to a club where kids looked like they were too pretentious to dance. Oh well, we danced for them. Seems the ladies liked that.

Where I live, I can hear the birds’ wings

The card my flatmates attached to the bottle is probably the best thing ever. Signatures and salutations in a range of eight or so languages fill the card from edge to edge. Strange Chinese letters and Turkish script and the traditional “Happy birthday” are all accounted for. It’s fantastic, and I’m in love with the 11 people I live with. I guess we’re a big, functional family.

And further, Belgian chocolate is indeed the best chocolate in the world.

  2. Happy Birthday Andy!

Don't forget that 40 is pretty good too. You finally get the feeling that you're on top of everything, and still young enough to enjoy it.
