The coolest thing about little kids is the purity of their emotions. Four-year-olds don’t know how to mask their feelings; their faces show what they’re thinking. Us grown-ups have long since learned to disguise our feelings.

In this photo, the girl on the right was showing the other girl her missing front tooth. Definitely got a look of cool from her friend.

These girls go to my mom’s preschool. She’s taught preschool for nearly as long as I can remember. She used to teach it in our basement, but she’s recently bought a house for her preschool. When I was in high school, I’d find some pretty weird stuff in my bed since the kids would play in my room. I’d just laugh when the boys would stash G.I. Joes in my bed so that the other class wouldn’t find them.
