The next few years

UWaterloo

It hasn’t been long since I graduated from college, but I’m about to do it again, this time with an M.S. in computer science.

But that’s not what I want to talk about, I want to talk about what I’m going to do after the degree. Most normal people with two degrees figure it’s about time to join the real world and get a job. Not me. I am going to more school. That’s right, next year I’m moving to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, to join the computer science PhD program at the University of Waterloo.

Naturally, I’m glad to defer my entry to the real world. Sure I’ll have to work harder for much less pay, but the work is so much more enjoyable… mostly because it’s more interesting.

I have mixed feelings about moving to Canada. On one hand, I’m overjoyed to leave the current political climate of the U.S. behind. On the other, I am leaving my home, if only for four years, and it will make certain things more difficult. But overall, I am certain it will be a rewarding experience. And besides, it’s not like I had to choose Canada, I had offers from U.S. schools, but who wants to live in New Jersey or the suburbs of NYC? (don’t get me wrong, NYC would be awesome, just not the Long Island suburbs)

Anyhow, I’ll be in Fort Collins this summer, teaching a course here at CSU. It’s the first time I’ll be teaching my own course, so I’m thrilled to have the additional control. I’ll certainly have to make some trips to places in the area to visit people before taking off in late August.

  1. Congrats (late) on getting in to a school you will enjoy. We'll have to throw down some 40s before your big departure!

  2. Thanks Austin. I certainly hope I'll enjoy Waterloo. I've definitely enjoyed my time here at CSU, but there's certain advantages of going to Waterloo. It's bigger (they have 80 CS profs!) for one, so there will be more smart peeps to work with, which is what it's really all about.

And does it have to be 40s? I don't think any of us could stomach that crap these days.

  3. Big Budder!
I am going to miss you! But I will be a roasting piggy and you will be a frozen piggy sooo I guess I am okay with that.
I want to help you move up there!

  4. Dude.

I've thought of you as the quintessential college student for as long as I have been blogging. I'm so glad that you are not getting out of the biz! And of course, once you get your phd, you'll be able to do nothing except teach at a college, so, like me, you will never get out!

    Cool.

  5. Thanks Chris, I rather like being a college student. Sure, grad school isn't exactly the good life of undergrad days, but it still beats the real world. I'm not sure if I'm going to stay here forever... I may get out and work in industry after graduating... it's a long ways off though.

  6. I think you will enjoy Waterloo and we will come up and see you. Take some good pics of stuff. Cheerio, old boy.
